DHARAMSHALA, October 14: The 8th Tibet Film Festival kicked off this morning under the motto "RE-IMAGINING THE ROOF OF THE WORLD", the only festival in the world focusing solely on Tibetan filmmaking, at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. The festival promises various premieres, discussions in the presence of Tibetan filmmakers and a ‘short film competition.’

Year by year, a small group of about 30 filmmakers succeeds in telling wonderful stories about Tibetan everyday life. These filmmakers have produced around 30 documentaries and feature films over the past five to ten years, covering a wide range of topics. The Tibet Film Festival - the only one of its kind - has become a place where established and hardworking Tibetan filmmakers can meet with young and passionate Tibetan filmmakers and a committed audience.

The festival’s India Coordinator Tenzin Dhondup said the competition has nine entries on the theme ‘Dream’ from emerging Tibetan filmmakers. “Over the years, the art of story telling has improved, so has the quality of the pictures. We have filmmakers now, but we need Tibetan writers who can write stories for films,” said Dhondup, who with a small group of volunteers are taking care of the event.

A parallel festival is being held in Zurich, Switzerland. “We are extremely excited to carry out the 8th Tibet Film Festival here in Zurich, Switzerland. We must show interest and pay attention to the films that are being created by Tibetans both in and outside Tibet. They tell stories that don’t follow the usual narrative and show the world a different and independent image of Tibet”, says Tenzin Kelden, Member of the Festival Committee and Co-Program Coordinator.

At this year's event, three Swiss premieres and two premieres in Dharamsala can be celebrated. "Mystic Mountain", a psycho-thriller by Tsering Dhondup. “The Sacred Arrow", a love drama set in eastern Tibet, is a parable about the alienation of the individual and the return to one's own culture by Tibetan director Pema Tseden. The third premiere comes from the Tenzin Dazel, a Paris based filmmaker who will present her film "Royal Cafe”, which deals with life in exile. In Dharamsala, the films “Mystic Mountain” will premiere o Sunday and “Jigden” by Shenpenn Khymsar was premiered today.
