DHARAMSHALA, MAR 3: Former minister in Samdhong Rinpoche’s cabinet and an ex member of Tibetan parliament, Lobsang Nyandak, announced his candidature for the Sikyong 2021 elections online yesterday. Currently working as the President of the Tibet Fund, the announcement was made through his official page on Facebook, “Lobsang Nyandak for Sikyong 2021” with his campaign slogan “Together, We Build Tibet’s Future”. The race for the Sikyong election has already witnessed two candidates including Kasur Gyari Dolma’s announcement in January.
Sikyong Lobsang Sangay’s second term as the President of the Central Administration (CTA) will duly complete its course in 2021. The upcoming election will be at the centre of exile political discussion whereby the Tibetan diaspora will decide the next head of the Tibetan polity. Other than the announcements of Kasur Gyari Dolma and Kasur Lobsang Nyandak, the names of possible candidates have been noted to be Penpa Tsering and Dongchung Ngodup through general conjectures by the public.
However, the race of the next Sikyong title will see many candidates from all across the diaspora. With the two announcements, the Tibetan public will again indulge in rigorous debates on the issues of regional politics, education system, Middle Way Approach (MWA), religious standing, CTA funding and more.
Kasur Lobsang Nyandak served as General Secretary of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Chandigarh, in 1987. He worked in various leadership positions, including as the director of the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in 1996. He has also served as the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Americas.
