DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 1: A Tibetan teenager has reportedly been shot dead in Somerville, United States, late Tuesday afternoon. The deceased is identified as Tenzin Kunkhyen, a resident of the neighboring Malden area and had moved to the country as an immigrant from India years ago.

The incident took place inside a home on Farragut Avenue in Somerville city around 5 p.m. on Aug. 29. Kunkhyen, 16, was rushed to Mount Auburn Hospital where he was pronounced dead due to a gunshot wound on the chest. The deceased attended Somerville High School and grew up in the city.

Local police have not released any details about suspects or motive. However, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said the shooting was not random and that Kunkhyen was inside the home with people he knew.

The local DA office official Marian Ryan said in a statement released Thursday night that police are trying to locate Jonathan T. Perry of Somerville as part of the investigation over Kunkhyen’s death. It is not clear if Perry is a fugitive in the case.

Spokesman for the Tibetan Association of Boston, Tenzin Sonam, told Boston Globe that the family of the deceased is of Tibetan heritage and had emigrated from India to the United States years ago. “He was the son of Tibetan parents who moved here from India. The family is devastated, his relatives are in shock by his death,” Sonam said.

The Mayor of Malden and the Superintendent of Schools released a joint statement, "On behalf of the City of Malden and the Malden Public Schools, we are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of one of our students. What makes this particularly painful was that he was just a teenager. We offer our support and deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time."
