DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 7: A group of Chinese academics and advocates plan to nominate Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou for Nobel Peace prize for their maiden meeting as heads of the two countries in November at Singapore.

Peng Peigen, a former professor of architecture at Beijing’s elite Tsinghua University who is leading the initiative have been quoted by Taiwan based Storm Media that the two leaders have displayed “the best examples for the world and regional peace and stability,” by convening such a meeting, signing 23 deals between Taiwan and China covering trade, transit and investment and also Xi’s disarmament of 300,000 troops.

Peng announced on Dec. 27 that they were going to file the nomination to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Three days later, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Dec. 30 that the nomination is a nongovernmental “spontaneous behavior,” and that it had no comment, according to Quartz Web portal.

The nominating group of eight men from the main land includes a former Tsinghua University president and president of the China World Peace Foundation, all of whom are considered ‘qualified nominators’ according to the guidelines of the Nobel Foundation. The guidelines state, “Members of national assemblies and governments of states University rectors,” “professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes” are considered qualified nominators, among others.

Xi’s nomination, albeit by a group of Chinese academics, comes at a time when China’s own human rights record in Tibet, Xinjiang and the mainland is under criticism from various rights groups with former recipient of the award Liu Xiaobo still languishing in Chinese prison.

Public speaker and motivational speaker Deepak Chopra last month tweeted, “Chinese Leader Xi Jinping: Release Imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo and Wife Liu Xia”.
