DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 28: In a recognizable foreign policy diktat for Mongolia, China has indefinitely postponed its scheduled bilateral meet with Mongolia following the visit of Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Mongolia earlier last week.

Two vital meetings scheduled for the beginning of December between the two countries where Mongolia was to discuss loan and development projects with China has been “indefinitely postponed” as was as the bi-annual meeting between the legislative bodies of the two nations. Mongolian Prime Minister Erdenebat Jargaltulga’s planned visit to China in 2017 is also in doubt, Mongolian Foreign Minister Munkh-Orgil Tsend told reporters in Ulaanbaatar on Thursday.

“The meeting was intended for negotiations on soft loans and the projects on Tavan Tolgoi railroad, a copper plant and coal gasification project. Unfortunately, the Chinese side responded that this visit was unacceptable,’’ Munkh-Orgil Tsend said. Mongolia which is heavily reliant on its neighbor China is going through a grave economic situation, unable to recover from a recession.

The organizer of the Dalai Lama’s Mongolia trip, Davaapurev, a monk from Ulaanbaatar based Gandan monastery has responded by saying that the visit was “separate from politics and for religious purposes only.”

China’s FM spokesperson Geng Shuang on Nov.19 told reporters in Beijing, “We strongly demand that Mongolia, for the purpose of maintaining the general picture of a sound and steady development of bilateral ties, earnestly stick to its commitment on Tibet-related issues, does not allow the visit by the Dalai Lama and does not provide any form of support and convenience to the Dalai Lama clique”.

The Tibetan spiritual leader who has retired from holding political office is being labeled a “separatist” by Beijing and is constantly monitored during visits to various countries, often reprimanding host nations for allowing him platform to carry out divisive activities.
