DHARAMSHALA, April 18: In yet another twist in the Sino Indian territorial dispute, China has named six places in the region it claims as Southern Tibet.

The official names of the six places are Wo'gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoidêngarbo Ri, Mainquka, Bümo La and Namkapub Ri as per the announcement made by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on April 13.

“China did not previously have official names for some South Tibet areas, but now China has a better understanding and recognition of the geography in South Tibet, including the names of areas in the region," Xiong Kunxin, a professor of ethnic studies at Beijing's Minzu University of China, told state-run daily, the Global Times.

According to the professor, naming these places demonstrates China's territorial sovereignty, which till date remains a bone of contention between the two super powers of Asia despite having over 18 border talks.

China claims Tawang, known as the pearl of South Tibet, and is a holy land to Tibetans and that it belongs to the Cona County, Lhoka Tibet Autonomous Region.

Yesterday, Beijing once again asked India not to undermine Beijing’s interest by using the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama following his much-objected visit to Arunachal Pradesh.

“Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh had a negative impact on India-China ties. India should observe commitment on Tibet-related issues and should not use the Dalai Lama to undermine China’s interests,” said Lu Kang, Spokesperson of Foreign ministry on Monday.

During the Tibetan spiritual’s visit to Tawang, both the central and the state government had given their full support and had said that the Dalai Lama is a respected guest of India and is allowed to travel freely to every part of India.
