DHARAMSHALA, December 12: Nine members of the Students for a Free Tibet (India) were arrested last night around 6 PM (December 11) for carrying out a protest against the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi outside the Imperial Hotel in New Delhi.

The members of SFT were reportedly arrested for shouted slogans of ‘Freedom in Tibet’ and carrying banners, which read ‘Tibet is Not A Part of China’ and ‘China Free Tibet Now’.

“Nine protestors have been detained at Connaught Place police station. They were protesting 200 meters away from the hotel near the police barricades,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) BK Singh.

Those arrested, six men and three women, include Tenzin Tselha, National Director; Lobsang Tseten, Campaign Director; and Tenzin Lobsang, Development Associate. They were later released late last night around 1 AM.

As a precautionary measure, the Delhi police had shut down Janpath Metro Station and blocked Janpath Road for the public.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that no other protest had happened last night.

“China’s occupation of Tibet directly affects India’s wellbeing. The planned 1,000-km-long tunnel to divert the Brahmaputra River, for example, is a serious threat to India’s water security. Sushma Swaraj, the Foreign Minister of India, should demand a water sharing treaty or basin organization with China to stop these types of damaging projects,” Tsela said in the official press release.

The students’ organization kicked off their protest against the visiting Chinese delegation led by Yi on Sunday by displaying a large banner over a flyover near Indira Gandhi International Airport, which had a Tibetan national at the bottom and a slogan that read ‘Wang Yi, Free Tibet Now’.

Similarly, the Tibetan Youth Congress had ‘strongly condemned’ Yi’s visit. Yi is the first Chinese leader to visit India following the Doklam row and is currently in New Delhi for the Russia-India-China (RIC) Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
