Dharamshala, November 18: International Pop sensation Katy Perry has become the latest celebrity to be banned by China following her controversial concert performance at the Taipei Arena in Taiwan in 2015.

Katy Perry was set to perform at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai on November 28.

According to report of Page Six, celebrity and pop culture news section of the New York Post, the singer was initially granted a visa to perform at the show in Shanghai. However, the officials were reminded of her extending support for Taiwan during her performance.

She wore the national flag of Taiwan during the concert and also wore a sunflower dress symbolic to the Sunflower Student Movement, a movement against Taiwan’s trade pact with China in 2014.

“For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social-media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country. Maroon 5 was banned a few years ago because one band member wished the Dalai Lama happy birthday on Twitter,” said a source.

Multi-Grammy Award winner, Lady Gaga was banned from China after she interviewed Tibetan Spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in a live streamed video through Facebook on January 26, 2016.

Numerous international singers and artistes have been banned or their concerts scrapped just by associating or posting a picture with the Tibetan spiritual leader. The infamous list also includes Bon Jovi, Oasis, Bjork and Selena Gomez.

In April last year, Selena Gomez’s China tour was canceled due to her picture with the exiled Tibetan leader, which she posted in 2014. Similarly, last year Beijing pulled the plug on Jon Bon Jovi’s first ever concert in China over the use of the Dalai Lama’s picture at a concert in Taiwan in 2010.

Hollywood actors such as Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone and Director of Kundun, Martin Scorsese are also prohibited from going to China due to their association with the Dalai Lama or Tibet issue.
