DHARAMSHALA, October 27: International human rights groups and activists have urged the UN members not to reelect China on the UN’s Human Rights Council (HRC) on Friday, citing China’s failure to keep up with the international human rights standards.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) have explicitly stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s administration have violated its ‘voluntary pledge’ to the HRC and should be ‘disqualified from being reelected for a renewed membership seat on the Council.’

“They (UN Member States) should take into consideration the full human rights record of Member States seeking a seat,” said CHRD, “At stake is the credibility of the HRC and Member States must take a principled stand against China’s bid.”

Expressing serious concern, Louis Charbonneau, UN Director at HRW said, “The Council’s ability to successfully expose and hold violators to account is under threat because a number of countries use it to thwart attempts to expose their own crimes and abuses.”

Despite various alarms over China’s Human rights abuse, it managed to gain a seat at the United Nation’s top rights body in 2013.

“China has on many occasions refused to cooperate with UN human rights mechanisms and maneuvers to undermine human rights norms and weaken UN institution-building,” said CHRD in their statement.

Yang Jianli, President of Initiatives for China and former Tiananmen Square activist, in his article in the Washington Post exposed that in the current three-year term as the member of HRC, China has committed several human right abuses including death of Tulku Tenzin Delek while in prison in 2015 and the number of Tibetan self-immolators rising from 122 to 145.

“No reasonable person could possibly find any excuse to either overlook China’s recent horrific human rights record or to trust one more time China’s promises to be good in the future,” Yang wrote, adding that democracies around the world should openly cast a no vote on China.

Freedom House, in their annual report, has placed Tibet as the second worst place in the world for political rights and civil liberties and Congressional-Executive Commission on China in their 2016 report stated that Beijing has maintained its harsh security measures disregarding basic human rights and its protection in the ethnic minority regions.
