DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 28: India and China have reached a mutual consensus over the long military standoff as the disputed Doklam plateau saw armed contingents of both countries for almost three months, neither willing to back off.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs released a statement on Monday saying, “expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going." The MEA said that after weeks of sustained diplomacy between New Delhi and Beijing, the 'Doklam Disengagement Understanding' has been reached.

China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “China will make necessary adjustments and deployment in accordance with those (situation at Doklam) changes" and also added that Chinese troops will continue patrolling the region.

On June 16, China was confronted by treaty bound India, Bhutan’s protectorate while Chinese military was constructing strategic metaled road in the disputed Doklam plateau. India crossed the Sikkim border with troops and bulldozers stopping the construction of the road built by China.

The completion of the Chinese military project would give them tactical upper hand in what the experts call the “chicken’s neck” region near Siliguri in the event of disharmony with India.

The weeks since saw China posturing an aggressive stance, passing rhetoric hinting towards military action against India. However, India followed suit and showed no signs of backing off. Earlier this month, Indian and Chinese troops were seen hurling stones and engaging in physical confrontation when PLA troops tried to cross over into the Indian side of the Pangong Lake in Ladakh’s remote border region.

On August 8, the exiled Tibetan leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said that China and India are both great and ancient nations that have to live side by side. The only realistic approach is one that achieves mutual benefit; the Dalai Lama was reported as saying by his private office. The Tibetan leader however asserted that “there have been Chinese troops on the Indian border since the so-called liberation of Tibet where there were none before,” according to the same report.
