ibetans in and out of Tibet, along with the Chinese, Vietnamese and many other rights supporters, in over 30 countries (1) will take to the streets to join the Globe Tibetan Resistance (2) and to mark the 53rd anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising (3) when thousands of Tibetans rose up against China’s invasion and occupation of Tibet. In Hong Kong, citizens and supporters will hold a rally and candlelight vigil for Tibet in the Cultural Center of Tsim Sha Tsui, calling on the international society to support the Tibetan Resistance and strongly condemn the Chinese government's repressive policies, human rights abuses and violations of freedom in Tibet. (4)

“As Tibetans in Tibet continue to resist China’s violent regime to the point of taking their own lives in protest, we go to the streets to ensure that their calls for freedom echo around the world." said Dorothy Hui, one of the Candlelight Vigil organizers in Hong Kong, " We share the pain of the self-immolated Tibetan martyrs and condemn the PRC’s suppression in Tibet."

In 1959, Tibetans rose up against China's illegal invasion and occupation of their country; 53 years later, the Tibetan people continue to defy the ruling of the Chinese. Since January 2012, 13 Tibetan monks, nuns and lay people (4) in eastern Tibet have set themselves alight as an act of protest, calling for freedom for Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama. So far, 26 Tibetans have self-immolated in Tibet, at least 19 of whom have died (5), including Rinchen, a mother of four children (6). The same calls for freedom were also heard during a recent wave of large-scale peaceful protests in January and February 2012. Chinese security forces responded to this resistance by opening fire on crowds, killing at least five Tibetans and seriously injuring many more.

"On 10 March 2012, We commemorate Tibet Uprising day.The history of resistance of Tibet is rich with the stories of heroes, inside and outside of Tibet. All of them deserve to be remembered and become an inspiration for continuing struggles against China’s occupation."said Brigitte von Bulow, chair of United Nations for a Free Tibet."We vow to intensify our efforts in support of Tibetans who are engaging in resistance to take back their freedom. And we call on world governments and the global community to intensify efforts for multilateral pressure on China to immediately end its siege on the Tibetan nation before more lives are lost.”

More than five decades after the 1959 Uprising, Tibetans in Tibet are continuing to risk everything in defiance of the Chinese leadership, which recently announced it was preparing for “war” against Tibetan “saboteurs” (7). On Feb 22 2012, we did not celebrate Losar (8), but organized and were involved with get-togethers and vigils in solidarity on request of Dr. Lobsang Sangay, PM (Kalon Tripa) of Tibet. This month, UN Human Rights Council published a written statement on discrimination in Tibet. The statement revealed that the Chinese government’s restrictive policies "Not only curtails the right to freedom of religion or belief, but further exacerbate the existing tensions, and are counterproductive."

China is responsible for writing the darkest chapter in Tibet’s history but we are here today to support Tibetans in their determination to regain their freedom. "Tibetans desire freedom.China must end its rule in Tibet. We stand in solidary with Tibetans in Tibet, especially those who are under high repression in Ngaba,Kardze and Golok"said Choi Suk-fong, another Candlelight Vigil organizers in Hong Kong."we call on hongkong citizens to show respect for human rights in your response to the protests in Tibet. And We call on hongkong government to join with other world leaders to help Tibetan people live their lives in peace and freedom.”

3. 10 March 2012 is the anniversary of one of the most momentous days in Tibetan history; on this day in 1959 thousands of Tibetans in Tibet took to the streets of Lhasa to protest against Chinese rule and protect their leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As China shelled Lhasa, the Dalai Lama was forced to escape from Tibet. In 2008, 10 March was the beginning of the most widespread opposition to China’s occupation of Tibet as protests swept the Tibetan plateau.
