DHARAMSHALA, Sep. 25: Three monks from the Ngaba monastery in the restive region by the same name in eastern Tibet’s Ngaba county, Sichuan Province, have been detained by Chinese police in separate incidents of solo protests, sources said.

Kanyak Tsering, a monk from the Kirti monastery here said that three monks, all belonging to the Ngaba monastery in occupied Tibet, have been arrested this month in separate incidents and continue to be held incommunicado by Chinese police. While the identity of two have been ascertained, the identity of another continues to be unknown as of now.

A monk of Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, Tenzin Gelek, was arrested on 6 September by Chinese police after he carried out a lone protest calling for “Freedom in Tibet”. He belonged to the division two of Meruma township. Chinese authorities continue to hold the 18-year-old monk incommunicado weeks after his arbitrary arrest from Ngaba town.

Gelek had posted two blogposts on his WeChat account that condemned Chinese rule in Tibet. The posts, ‘Do You Think I Could Endure to Live?’ and ‘To the Communist Party of China’, using the pseudonym ‘Sarin’ were posted prior to his arrest.

Similarly, on September 23, Dorjee Rabten, 23, staged a solo protest in Ngaba County town. The Tibetan monk who belonged to Kirti Monastery was swiftly taken away by authorities following his protest. He is a native of Meruma Town in Ngaba County.

Another monk whose identity is unknown was also detained earlier in the month, his whereabouts and condition is unknown.

Dharamshala based Rights group Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) said they condemn the detention of the monks and called on the local Chinese authorities to release them immediately without any condition.

TCHRD also said, “Incommunicado nature of the detention would invariably subject the monks to torture and other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment at the hands of security forces. Chinese authorities must abandon the heinous practice of criminalizing human rights and subjecting Tibetans to arbitrary arrests, detention and disappearance”.
