DHARAMSHALA, July 4: The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN in Geneva, Mr Jan Kara called on China yesterday at the 41st Session of Human Rights Council a member of the council to fully cooperate with Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights(OHCHR) and uphold its international obligation in Xinjiang and Tibet.

At the 21st meeting of General Debate on Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural right, Kara spoke of the recently marked 30th anniversary of the crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in Tiananmen Square.

He said, “Honoring the victims of the crackdown requires us to address the current situation of the Human rights defenders and lawyers in China.”

He called for the immediate release of Wang Quanzhang, Guo Yushan, Tashi Wangchuk and others.

Wang Quanzhang is a Chinese human rights lawyer who was arrested in August 2015 as part of the "709 crackdowns" on human rights lawyers.

Guo Yushan is a Chinese scholar, human rights activist, and a co-founder of a non-governmental organization Transition Institute. He was detained on October 12, 2014, on the criminal charge of provoking troubles.

Tashi Wangchuk is the Tibetan language rights activist sentenced to five years in prison in May 2018 on the charge of "incitement of separatism.” He appeared in the New York Times(NYT) video in 2015 speaking about lack of language rights in Tibet.

The Czech Republic has stood up for Tibet on multiple occasions.

Zdenek Hrib, the mayor of Prague defied China in the past by openly expressing his support for Taiwan and Tibet.

He met with the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) President Dr Lobsang Sangay on March 6, 2019, who was in Prague to attend the opening of the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.

The Mayor presented a symbolic key to city gates to Sangay as a “symbol of trust and friendship” and promised to raise the Tibetan flag on the buildings of Prague City Hall to commemorate the 60th anniversary of 1959 Tibetan Uprising as well as to “show solidarity with your people and their uneven struggle for cultural survival within the People’s Republic of China.”

In March, his administration restored the practice of flying the Tibetan flag from Prague’s town hall, reinstating a tradition begun in the era of the Czech Republic’s first post-communist president, Vaclav Havel, that was dropped by the previous city administration.

He had openly objected to the "one China" clause in the Partnership Agreement signed by Prague and Beijing during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the city in 2016.
