DHARAMSHALA, April 9: Exile Tibetans are gearing up for major political campaigns in the coming weeks in light of the ongoing crisis inside Tibet.

Leading from the front, the Dharamshala based Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile has set up a five-member committee of parliamentarians to pilot an international campaign to highlight Tibet’s deteriorating human rights situation.

“We have already formed a committee of parliamentarians who will be in charge of organising and leading mass campaigns in the coming months,” Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan parliament, Khenpo Sonam Tenphel told Phayul.

The committee, consisting of Karma Yeshi, Jamyang Soepa, Geshe Monlam Tharchin, Kriti Dolkar Lhamo, and Pema Jugney, all sitting members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, are filling in the last details for a “worldwide freedom torch rally.”

“We have planned a worldwide freedom-torch rally and we are in the stage of finalising the dates of the campaign,” Pema Jugney told Phayul. “We will announce the dates and campaign details soon.”

Speaking at a press conference last month, Speaker of the Tibetan parliament, Penpa Tsering had told reporters that the Tibetan exile leadership will convene a special meeting this year to specifically discuss the prevalent situation inside Tibet.

“A special meeting will be held in order to discuss what we in exile must do to address the critical situation in Tibet,” Speaker Tsering told reporters.

The speaker had also urged Tibetans across the world to be “ready and determined” to participate in world-wide movements.

“The Parliament and the Cabinet will be forming a joint committee to lead the mass campaigns and we urge Tibetans to be ready and determined to support the movement,” Tsering added.

During the 2008 mass uprisings in Tibet, the Tibetan Parliament and Kashag had jointly formed the “Tibetan Solidarity Committee,” which was responsible for organising numerous campaigns and mobilizing international support.

Since 2009, the wave of self-immolations in Tibet has witnessed 33 Tibetans set their bodies on fire demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet. Major protests involving thousands of Tibetans in recent months have been brutally suppressed with indiscriminate firing and arrests. Tibetans suspected of taking part in peaceful protests have been handed down jail terms for up to 13 years.
