DHARAMSHALA, May 26: Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama met Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann today in Vienna.

Although details of the meeting are not clear, Chancellor Faymann had earlier called the meeting "a clear political signal for human rights, non-violence and dialogue and against oppression."

Faymann had added that he was personally interested in meeting such an "eminent figure" as the Dalai Lama.

The Austrian leader dismissed warnings from Beijing that its relations with Vienna could be threatened by the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader's 11-day visit to Austria.

"I answer the question of whom I meet myself, and that goes for the Dalai Lama," Faymann said. "Austria is a country which has always shown itself to be on the side of human rights, and I alone am responsible for my agenda."

On his arrival in Vienna Friday, the 76-year old Tibetan leader met Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger.

Following the meetings, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei today said Austria’s actions were a “severe interference with China's internal affairs, hurt the feelings of Chinese people and sent false signals to the "Tibet independence" forces.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing and the Chinese Embassy in Austria will both lodge solemn representations to the Austrian side, the spokesman said.

The elected leader of the Tibetan people, Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay, who is also in Vienna yesterday held a joint press conference with the Dalai Lama.

"It is very clear the situation within Tibet is dire and is getting worse," Dr Sangay said referring to the ongoing wave of self-immolations inside Tibet.

He said he would urge the EU to name a special coordinator on Tibet "and if possible to send a delegation to Tibetan areas where there are cases of human rights violations ... particularly the cases of self-immolation, so that they could examine why it is happening and ... how best to solve the issue.”
