DHARAMSHALA, June 22: Tibetan activist who had attempted self immolation outside the Chinese Embassy six years ago had breathed his last on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Prayers and condolences have poured in for Migmar (also known as Sherab Tsedor)
since the news of his demise broke on Facebook. Fellow activist Tenzin Tsundue wrote, “I have seen him as a teenager activist and grow up into one of the most hardworking foot-soldiers. We often debated Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Buddha and the Dalai Lama. He was a true patriot who dedicated his life in the Tibetan freedom movement.”

Various Tibetan NGOs, friends and officials arrived at Delek Hospital to pay their last respects to the activist.

The 30-year-old former student of Lower TCV was a familiar face in Tibetan political activism. He carried out a solitary hunger strike that lasted for 22 days and set himself ablaze on November 4, 2011 to draw attention to the self immolations in Tibet. He had said before setting his body alight, “We are dying and it's the moral responsibility of every freedom loving people to support us. I beg and plead the world leaders and peace loving people to help solve the issue of Tibet.”

He was Information/ International Relation Officer at the National Democratic Party of Tibet. He had been the Joint Secretary of Delhi’s Regional Tibetan Youth Congress. He was survived by his mother, stepfather, a younger brother and an elder sister. He will be cremated on Friday (June 23).

“The funeral and post - death rituals will be taken care of by his family. However, we are here on our personal capacities to pay our respects as he was our fellow freedom fighter who had done so much for Tibet and Tibetan struggle,” said Tsewang Dolma, Information Secretary at Tibetan Youth Congress.

Expressing his condolences, Tenzin Dhargyal a schoolmate of the deceased said, “It was sad to learn of his passing . Since his school days, he was very passionate and determined towards contributing to the Tibetan cause.”
