DHARAMSHALA, Aug. 6: A Tibetan man in Eastern Tibet has reportedly been detained and beaten up last month for allegedly maintaining links with a member of the so-called “Dalai Clique” in exile. The man was later released after no substantial evidence reported Radio Free Asia.

Jampa Choegyal aged 30 was taken into custody while attending the Tsechok festival at Chuwar monastery, in Chamdo’s Dragyab County in the Tibetan Autonomous Region last month.

An anonymous source cited by RFA was reported as saying, “When he arrived at the township, he was immediately detained and also beaten up. Jampa Choegyal and other Tibetans from his hometown had no clue why the police summoned him or why he was being detained.” The same source also said that Jampa was later released after no substantial evidence was found.

The Chinese authorities prodded Choegyal alleging he maintained ties with his relative Ngawang Jampa who had moved to Australia recently after coming into India as a refugee. The Chinese authorities believed Ngawang Jampa to be a member of what they called the “Dalai Clique”.

The epithet coined by Beijing refers to the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his immediate circle of personnel in exile. China vehemently accuses the Nobel laureate of trying to split Tibet although the Dalai Lama has maintained that Middle Way Approach to live within the framework of Peoples Republic of China is the solution.

Tibetan exile government officially known as the Central Tibetan Administration’s Head of EU, UN and Human Rights Desk, Kalden Tsomo wrote that such malpractice for Tibetans are unfortunately everyday realities on the ground in Tibet.

“It does come as a surprise that the Chinese authorities see a Tibetan in Tibet communicating with his relative in India as a threat to state security and an act of espionage. This attests to larger state of fear and intimidation prevalent across Tibet,” said Kalden Tsomo,
