DHARAMSHALA, March 7: A Tibetan man in his forties today died following a self-immolation protest against the Chinese rule in Tibet.

Tsekho from Meruma Township in Ngaba County, Sichuan Province, set himself ablaze around 5PM (local time) in Meru

Tsekho, who is also known as Tsekho Tukchak, in his 40s set himself on fire at around five in the evening in Meruma Township. Meo Kunjam, a former political prisoner currently residing in Australia, confirmed Tsekho died on the spot.

A native of division 5 of the township, Tsekho resorted to the act of immolation to protest the harsh polices against the Tibetans in Tibet by the Chinese government, says Kunjam, who is also a native of Meuruma.

Tsekho, who is survived by his mother, wife and two daughters, was known to be a patriotic person.

This marks the 152 self-immolations since 2009 and the first in 2018. Ngaba County has been a hotbed for self-immolations, solo protests and dissent against the Chinese rule in Tibet.

The self immolation by Tsekho comes three days ahead of the 59th anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day and the 10th anniversary of the 2008 pan-Tibet Uprising.
