DHARAMSHALA, June 26: One of the two Nepalese legislators who faced intense backlash for attending an international lawmakers’ conference in Riga, Latvia in May has been suspended by his party for what is being seen as infringing upon Kathmandu’s recognition of the so called “one China policy”.

The Samajbadi Party Nepal lawmaker Pradip Yadav and Iqabal Miya of the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal attended a conference of International network of Parliamentarians who support Tibet, in the first week of May.

In a press conference on Tuesday, the Samajbadi Party Nepal stated that party’s central executive committee meeting held on Monday attended by party Chairman Upendra Yadav decided to suspend lawmaker Yadav for six months.

The Kathmandu Post reported that Yadav has been relieved of all his party responsibilities for six months after being found to have attended the function defying party’s policy as well as finding his clarification for attending the event unsatisfactory.

Earlier in May, the two Nepalese MPs held a press conference where they espoused remorse, and claimed that they were unaware of the motive of the event and even going so far as to say that the organisers had kept them in the dark about the objective of the event.

The event was organized by the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile in association with Latvian Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet and International Network of Parliamentarians on Tibet.
