DHARAMSHALA, April 20: A Tibetan monk belonging to Kirti Monastery has been released yesterday after completing his prison sentence of three years for carrying a solo protest in 2014.

Lobsang Gyatso has been released and has reached his monastery in Ngaba. However, there is no information on his physical condition.

The 23-year-old was arrested for carrying a solo protest on April 15, 2014 against the Chinese rule in Tibet. He used a hand-drawn Tibetan national flag, which he held while walking the streets of Ngaba and shouting slogans such as “freedom in Tibet” and “return of the Dalai Lama”.

On November 7, 2014, Lobsang Gyatso along with Lobsang Tenpa, a fellow Kirti monk were both sentenced up to three years in prison by the Barkham County People's Intermediate Court under the charges of 'separatist activities' and 'plotting against the nation'.

Similarly, Tenpa also used a hand-drawn Tibetan national flag, which he draped around his head while holding a portrait of the exile Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his solo protest.

Gyatso hails from 3rd Ruchen (division) of Meruma Township in Ngaba County, and is son of Betse (father) and Shichung (mother). He was studying in the ninth grade of monastic education at the time of his arrest.

Situated in the restive Ngaba town, monks from Kirti monastery have been on the front line of Tibetan struggle and has witnessed scores of self immolators and solo protesters emerging over the years from the monastery. The region has been ever since placed under heavy scrutiny with extreme surveillance, heavy monitoring and police presence round the clock.
