DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 1: An elderly Tibetan man has been released from Chinese prison in occupied Tibet after serving twelve years’ jail term, Gu-Chu-Sum, an organization that works for the welfare and plight of former Tibetan political prisoners, said.
Sonam Gyalpo was arrested in 2006 and was released from last week on August 27. It was Gyalpo’s third and longest stint in prison.
“The senior Tibetan political prisoner was arrested for the third time in less than two decades in 2006 for reasons deemed political, he was later handed a term of twelve years behind bars. However, no information regarding his health condition is available at the moment due to heightened crackdown on information outflow specifically in Tibetan Autonomous Region,” the Dharamshala based NGO reported.
Gyalpo who is from Yardok Township in Nakartse County situated in Lhokha Prefecture, TAR (Tibetan Autonomous Region) was first arrested on September 27,1987 when he took part in a large scale uprising around Lhasa which was brutally cracked down by Chinese armed forces. He was subsequently released after serving three years of imprisonment.
He was arrested for the second time in July 1992 for his engagement in political activity and spent more than a year in Chinese prison.
The elderly Tibetan man has been locked up in Chinese jail for over 16 years intermittently since the late 1980’s.
