DHARAMSHALA, April 21: Dismissing China’s official standardized’ name of six places it claims in Arunachal Pradesh, renowned journalist and Tibetologist Claude Arpi has called it a ‘childish reaction’ to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s visit to the disputed region.

“It is a childish reaction to the Dalai Lama's visit to the State earlier this month,” the 66-year-old French-born journalist wrote in his official blog.

He also highlighted that by naming these six places, Beijing probably wants to remind India of the 1962 War and the fact that the Dalai Lama ‘belongs to China’. The Tibetologist, however, maintained that the renaming is nothing new as many colonizers in the past have done.

“In this case, it will be difficult for China to convince the local populations to join them under the Communist banner,” he wrote.

Of all the six places, China has renamed Urgyeling, the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso, as Wo'gyainling. The Puducherry based author feels that the main reason behind this move is that Beijing is not ready to accept that a Dalai Lama could be born outside Tibet (China).

A state-run Chinese daily today warned that New Delhi would pay ‘dearly’ for allowing the visit and the naming of the places were in retaliation to that.

“It is time for India to do some serious thinking over why China announced the standardized names in Southern Tibet at this time. Playing the Dalai Lama card is never a wise choice for New Delhi. If India wants to continue this petty game, it will only end up in paying dearly for it,’’ the state-run Global Times said today.

China has been laying claims over the disputed border region by calling it Southern Tibet and has been a bone of contention between the two most populated nations in the world. The two super powers of Asia have held over 18 border talks.
