DHARAMSHALA, July 26: A south African MP earlier this month gave an impassioned speech in the parliament of Africa’s leading nation, calling on his government to do more for Tibet and called out China’s blatant human rights violation on Tibetans.

The African legislator from the Inkatha Freedom Party, Mkhuleko Hlengwa highlighted in his five-minute speech the atrocious human rights violations committed by the Chinese government in restive Tibet and demanded that the South African government must prioritise human dignity, freedom, and justice before economic ties with China, the exile Tibetan government run Tibet.net reported.

Speaking in the SA parliament on July 11, Hlengwa said, “I had the privilege of attending the Tibet day (celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday) in Pretoria which was hosted by his office (Office of Tibet, South Africa) here in South Africa. The shirt I am wearing was given to me then as a reminder that we as south of Africa, the land of the free should be a refuge of those who are world oppressed.”

“As we speak about the issue of Israel and Palestine in ensuring a lasting solution, the two-state solution, we agree with you. We must speak about the big bully China and it’s One-China policy and what it is doing and wreaking havoc for the people of the Tibet and Taiwan who themselves also want their freedom and democracy.”

The young MP also pointed to India and its role in helping the exile Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his people, saying that SA must not overlook human rights concerns in Tibet when trading with China.

He also urged his government to reflect and reconsider the decision to not allow the Dalai Lama to visit South Africa. “We must reflect, therefore, on the decisions we took not to grant a visa to the Dalai Lama as a reminder that we should never walk away from Human Rights,” he said.

China is the largest trading partner of South Africa. The Pretoria government, critics say, has kow-towed to Beijing’s directive when it comes to human rights concerns and politically touchy issues such as Tibet and Taiwan. The Dalai Lama was denied visa to SA on three occasions.
