DHARAMSHALA, September 18: The Tibetan People’s Movement for Middle Way today held its 7th ‘Middle Way Approach Day’ at Yongling School in McLeod Ganj today.

Attending as the Chief Guest was Tibetan Parliamentarian Dolma Tsering who said, “We must not forget that our common goal is beyond the Himalayas. It is unfortunate to see Tibetans bickering amongst themselves over differences in political stands. If it continues, it would be our loss in our own struggle.”

The Parliamentarian, a former history teacher, also added protest march and rallies are important in a struggle whether one believes in the Middle Way Approach (Umaylam) or Independence (Rangzen). However, she stressed that it is more imperative to improve the political awareness amongst Tibetans and to preserve the rich Tibetan culture, religion and language.

“We must not assume that MWA equates to accepting the false history of Tibet laid out by China. We have not sacrificed the historical narrative of Tibet being an independent state before the occupation,” she said at the event, which was also attended by representatives of various Tibetan NGOs and associations, and fellow Parliamentarians.

The Middle Way Approach seeking genuine self-rule for the Tibetan people within the framework of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China has been the official policy of the Tibetan government in exile known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration.

In 1997, a referendum over the political stand was held in which more than 64 percent of the total opinion letters received expressed against holding a referendum and expressed desire to support MWA. In June 1998, MWA approach adopted democratically by the Tibetan parliament as the official policy of the administration.
