47. Dalai Lama declines to answer questions on autonomy for Tibet

Hyderabad | January 3, 2006

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama today declined to answer questions on the demand for autonomy for Tibet during an informal chat with the media along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Dr Reddy today met the Buddhist leader at Hotel Taj Krishna, where he is staying amidst tight security and later talked to the media. When a correspondent asked him about his opinion on a 'controlled autonomy for Tibet' the Dalai Lama said this time the whole purpose of his visit was non political and mainly spiritoal. ''As you have the freedom to ask a question, so do I not to answer it,'' he quipped amidst laughter. Answering another question about if he was thinking of taking any steps to spread Budhism in India, he said ''my basic belief is that even at the time of Budha, there were different traditions, All great masters preached the same knowledge - the message of love, compassion, forgiveness, tolerence, contentment, self discipline and most important ahimsa. So therefore, I believe better to have different traditions than one.'' Answering a question on the unfinished tasks before him, the Lama said ''no task is ever finished.''
