31. China-backed Panchen Lama in rare trip to Tibet

BEIJING: SUNDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2005 (Reuters)

The Chinese-appointed 11th Panchen Lama returned to his traditional seat in the Tibetan city of Shigatse yesterday, state television reported, in a rare trip 10 years after he was chosen. Beijing appointed Gyaltsen Norbu as Tibet's second-most important religious figure in 1995, but the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, chose a different boy, exacerbating a split between the government and Dalai Lama that has tested Tibetans' loyalties. "The Panchen Lama walked among the welcome contingent composed of more than 600 monks and waved to the cheering crowds," state television reported of his arrival at the Panchen's traditional seat, Shigatse's Tashilhunpo monestary. It was thought to be his fifth trip since his appointment. The Dalai Lama's nominee has never been seen in public and is believed to be living under house arrest in Tibet, the mountainous Buddhist region Chinese troops invaded in 1950. Nine years later, the Dalai Lama led a failed uprising against Chinese rule and fled to India where he leads a government-in-exile in the hill station of Dharamsala. Television pictures showed the Panchen Lama, known as a "Soul Boy" touching the heads of followers and as they lined the streets, throwing traditional white prayer scarves. The Panchen arrived in the Tibetan capital Lhasa on October 25, before travelling to Shigatse on Saturday, the report said. It said the boy, who has been based in Beijing, would stay there for religious studies but gave no indication of the length of his stay. Many Tibetans remain secretly loyal to the Dalai Lama's choice of Panchen but the government is keen to prove Gyaltsen Norbu's acceptance among the monks before he turns 18 and is expected to take on a full leadership role within Tibetan Buddhism. The boy is now 15. The Panchen Lama is also seen as crucial because he will have a major role in the selection of the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, who is now 70. Chinese President Hu Jintao underscored support for the Panchen the government chose by meeting him on the eve of his birthday in February at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and presenting him with a prayer scarf. Earlier this year, religious leaders were also ordered to urge the faithful to show more support for the boy.
