DHARAMSHALA, March 1: Nuns of all the four major Tibetan schools of Buddhism and Bon tradition offered a long life prayer (Tib: Tenshug) to the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his long and healthy life at Thekchen Choeling Tsuglagkhang today.
Conducted at the request of Buddhist nuns, 875 nuns from over 40 nunneries from all over India and Nepal attended the prayer led by representatives of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism including Thomthog Rinpoche, Abbot of Namgyal Monastery and Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche.
“The real spirit of Tenshug is not limited to offering prayer. It lies in your unshakable belief and trust in me. Seeing your dedication, it inspires me to work hard even though I may have aged physically. So I get this zeal to continue for another 10-20 years,” the 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader said while thanking the nuns for their offering.
Applauding the years of hard work put in by nuns to achieve the highest academic degree of Geshema, the Dalai Lama said, “Ever since coming into exile, I have urged nuns to study the great canonical texts. Heeding my request, they have worked hard and now have achieved Geshema degree. It is commendable since becoming a Geshema requires multiple years of practice and study.”
Nuns in order to appear for Geshema examinations must first study the Five Great Canonical Texts (Shung Chen Kapo Nga) thoroughly for 17 years in their respective nunneries. Only then they will be allowed to appear for the four-year course.
The Central Tibetan Administration’s President (Sikyong) Dr. Lobsang Sangay and Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Speaker of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, attended the Tenshug along with other dignitaries of CTA.
Tibetans believe conducting long life prayer offerings will clear the obstructions in one's life, thereby advancing one’s continued wellbeing.
