DHARAMSHALA, April 11: A group of Tibetan youths from the Tibetan settlement of Doeguling, Mundgod in the south Indian state of Karnataka launched a bike rally earlier today in solidarity with the ongoing wave of self-immolations inside Tibet.

In the coming weeks, the 16 volunteers will be touring all the major cities in the Indian states of Karnataka and Goa, highlighting the critical situation inside Tibet.

Speaking at the flagging off ceremony, a representative for the group, Gudak said the rally had a dual objective.

“Through this rally we express our heartfelt solidarity with the 34 Tibetans who have set their bodies on fire demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet,” Gudak said.

“We also hope that our campaign, which we have self-funded, will motivate and encourage youngsters in exile to take greater responsibility in our freedom struggle.”

The bikers plan to carry out an extensive pamphleteering campaign as part of the rally.

“We are also planning to meet local and national media during their tour and spread the message around the globe about the ongoing atrocities being committed by communist China in Tibet,” Gudak added.

In a release, the bikers listed a set of six demands, “strongly” condemning the Chinese Government for resorting to “harsh and inhumane repressive measures” responsible for driving the Tibetans to self-immolation.

While demanding the release of all Tibetan political prisoners, the youth volunteers also urged for a “neutral, independent international fact finding delegation” to visit Tibet.

“We strongly appeal to the World leaders to raise the reality of the situation inside Tibet with the Chinese leaders and take effective responsibility in fulfilling their aspiration of the Tibetan people and to save Tibetan lives,” the group said.

Following the spate of self-immolations and mass uprisings in Tibet, the exile Tibetan leadership has openly called for “peaceful and dignified” activities and campaigns aimed at striving for the demands of those who have self-immolated.
