DHARAMSHALA, NOV. 16: The two-day Health Festival organized by the Tibetan Cancer Society in collaboration with Tibet Fund, Drokmo, National Cancer Institution AIIMS, Delhi State Cancer Institution, Fortis Hospital Kangra, Shree Balaji Hospital Kangra, SM Eye Hospital Kangra, SRL Diagnostic Centre, and referral partner Delek hospital concluded today with almost 800 patients participating.

The local community, Tibetans and Indians alike, attended the free initiative for cancer health awareness. General public from Dharamshala attended in large numbers; monks, nuns, students and elderly people were present for free consultations and checkups. The program hired specialized doctors from the aforementioned hospitals to increase the awareness of one’s own health. This cancer prevention drive attracted patients who suffer from various problems and helped them recognize the discrepancies through thorough check-ups. Free tests for ECG, 2D Echo, hypertension, blood sugar, eye check-ups were provided except for the h-pylori stool test and cervical Pap smear test which were charged for 150 rupees each.

The two-day festival was held at the Dalai Lama temple from 15th to 16th November. The specialists were called from famous medical institutions like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Fortis, Delhi State Cancer Institution and several hospitals from the Kangra region. The specialization varied from cardiology, oncology, hematology, gynecology, Ear Nose Throat (ENT), general medicine to eye surgery. There were almost 60 people in the festival team including the doctors and the volunteers for the event.

The two-day long exchange with patients and doctors through tests and consultations started from 9AM and finished at 5PM. With a lunch break in between, the interactions throughout the day were held in small make-shift tents that made up the consultation site. Many young Tibetan volunteers were present to help with the registration desk, translating from Tibetan to English/Hindi for the doctor and the patient, free medicine counter, and a donation desk where patients and visitors can donate for the same.

The successful event was funded by the Tibet Fund along with sponsors from the Dharamshala’s restaurants, travel agencies, Kangra hospitals through the execution of organizations like Tibetan Cancer Society and Drokmo.
