, April 26: The grass-roots activist group Students for a Free Tibet and the Tashi Lunpo monastery have passed a threshold in exile Tibetan diaspora’s Tibet movement, setting a ‘Guinness World Record’ while campaigning for the release of the Tibetan spiritual figure, the 11th Panchen Lama Gendun Choekyi Nyima, on Wednesday in south India’s Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement.

The exile seat of the Panchen Lama, Tashi Lhunpo monastery was lit yesterday evening with over 130,000 candles on a cake, marking the 29th birthday of the Panchen Lama who has been held incommunicado for the last 23 years. The world record for “the Most Candles Lit on a Birthday Cake,” now comfortably belongs to SFT surpassing the earlier record that stood 72,585 candles.

The spectacle was a unique symbolism for the number of Tibetans in exile, says SFT India’s national Director Tenzin Tselha who along with her team and the monks at Tashi Lhunpo achieved the feat. Tselha says that this year is precursor to next year when the Panchen Lama turns 30, and holds a significance that both the Tibetans who revere him and the members of the free world who stand for freedom, can lay dormant in the face of China’s lack of response on the front.

She told Phayul, “I believe that every Tibetan or members of the civil society in the free world should reinvent their approach while campaigning for Panchen Lama. Our world record is but a mere amplification to the core issue that is the abduction of a key Tibetan figure when he was just 5.

“As an activist, I feel we have managed to spread awareness through this campaign. And I feel whoever and wherever, people should always maintain an upward trajectory while campaigning on the issue. Only then the world will sync in to exert pressure on China to release the Panchen Lama.”

The Tashi Lhunpo monastery in their statement has called for the “swift release of the Panchen Lama, his teacher Chadrel Rinpoche and the Panchen Lama’s family” while adding that they pray for his “glorious reunification” with His Holiness the Dalai.
