DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 14: Students' and pro-independence group Students for a Free Tibet held a musical concert in the Indian capital on Wednesday on the ‘Tibetan Independence day’ to create awareness and draw support for the Tibetan issue and the ongoing situation inside Tibet under Beijing’s colonial rule.

The concert featured established mainstream bands such as rock band 'Parikrama', 'Man. Goes Human' as well as regional artistes such as 'Misty Terrace' from Bhutan and 'TibChick' from the Netherlands. Tibetan local artistes such as performer Mariko and Tibetan students also featured in the night’s show.

SFT India’s grass-roots coordinator Rinzin Choedon said that the event was especially held in New Delhi to reach out to the Indian masses and students to create awareness in that circle. She also said that the event also serves as a commemorative event for Tibetans on their independence day and a reminder of Tibet’s proud and undeniable nationhood.

Rock band 'Parikrama' known for their association and support for the Tibetan movement has done the event on pro-bono basis as have few other artistes The concert however, failed to draw in the crowds with attendance was estimated to be lesser than 400.

Tibetan Independence Day was launched on February 13, 2013 on the Centennial of the 1913 Tibetan Proclamation of Independence by the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. Over the years the students' group has single-handedly pushed for the commemoration of the day. Tibetan Independence Day has been celebrated in cities around the world (Dharamshala, Bangalore, Pune, Jalandhar, Kolkata and other cities around the world including New York, Boston, London, Edinburgh, Toronto, Paris, Taipei-Taiwan, Vienna-Austria, Sydney-Australia, Tokyo-Japan, Poland and Denmark) over the years under SFT’s banner.
