DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 31: Swadeshi Jagran Manch, an affiliate of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh held a mega-rally at the Ramlila ground in the Indian capital on Sunday calling for boycott of Chinese goods in the Indian market while also asserting their support for Tibet’s independence from China.

The rally participated by over a hundred thousand people marked a year since the economic wing of the RSS mobilized against Chinese products in the Indian market. The SJM marked 2017 as the “anti-China” year.

SJM had initiated signature campaign across the country and invited representatives from ASEAN and SAARC nations, excluding Pakistan at the rally. “China’s exports to India stand at $60 billion, whereas India’s exports to China are a mere $10 billion. This imbalance is worrying. Moreover, most of the Chinese items don’t conform to quality standards. Besides giving a call to boycott Chinese goods, we’re raising larger economic issues in order to check this menace. Chinese goods are making illegal entries into the Indian markets, either through Nepal or Sri Lanka. We’ve got responses from other countries regarding this rally,” SJM national co-convener, R Sundaram told Firstpost.

The organization, which has forwarded a list of demands to the central government, also included their support for an independent Tibet, recognizing China as a colonial force that occupied Tibet. Tibetan Parliament in exile’s Deputy Speaker Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok as well as local Tibetans also took part in the mega rally.

In August, the organization held similar drives in Maharashtra and targeted Chinese mobile companies like Vivo and Oppo which have strong share in the Indian mobile market.

China has been a persistent threat to Indian market, flooding it with Cheap Chinese products enabled primarily by cheap labor force, which has edged out Indian companies that cannot compete.

India’s bilateral trade with its largest partner China as of Oc. 2016-17 has grown to $71.45 billion in 2016-17 while the deficit increased to $51.1 billion over the past year, which is half of its overall trade deficit.
