Expert panel discussion on cultural genocide in Tibet on Wednesday 20th June from 10h45 to 12H00 at the Brussels Press Club Europe (Rue Froissart 95, 1040 Brussels - Schuman).

With the participation of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Tibet Support Group of Spain (Comite de Apoyo al Tibet -CAT).

A new report by the International Campaign for Tibet entitled ‘60 Years of Chinese Misrule: Arguing Cultural Genocide in Tibet’ (available on ICT’s website http://www.savetibet.org/resource-center/ictpublications/reports/60-years-chinese-misrule) examines the impact on Tibetan culture of Chinese Communist Party rule in Tibet and concludes that policies and practices targeting Tibetan culture and additional risk factors for serious instability in Tibet require a stronger response from the EU and from the international community.

The President of the International Campaign for Tibet Mary Beth Markey, who will present the report, said: “We feel strongly that the report makes a persuasive case that elements of cultural genocide are occurring in Tibet. As such, we are calling for stronger international efforts to address and reverse China’s culturally destructive policies and practices in Tibet. Broadly, we hope the report will be of value to the international discourse around genocide issues, and we welcome the constructive examination of arguments advanced in the report, including in Brussels, by genocide scholars, and a continuing discussion with country studies experts, human rights advocates, and others.”

FIDH, who recently co-published with ICT a report focusing on testimonies from Tibetan asylum seekers in Europe (« Human rights violations and self-immolation: Testimonies by Tibetans in exile » available in English and French at http://fidh.org/Human-rights-violationsand-self) will give its assessment about the 31st round of the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue (29th May, Brussels).

Alan Cantos, Director of the Tibet Support Group "Comite de Apoyo al Tibet" in Spain (CAT) and José Elías Esteve Moltó, international lawyer and Tibet legal expert will explain the the two cases in the Spanish Courts against Chinese authorities for crimes committed in Tibet, in which genocide, crimes against humanity and torture are the main ones.

In the context of ICT´s report, they will try to clarify and discuss the application of International Law and Universal Jurisdiction as peaceful method for resolving conflicts and seeking accountability and reconciliation in emerging democracies during or after severe trauma.
