HARAMSHALA, June 27: The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and former political prisoners’ movement Gu-Chu-Sum organized a series of events to commemorate the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26.

At the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts hall, the Tibet Theatre group in collaboration with the Department of Health (DoH) performed a play that depicted the suffering of the Tibetan prisoners inside Chinese run jails. It also showed how family members of a Tibetan arrested under ‘splittist’ charges are mistreated by the authorities.

Sonam Dolma, in-charge of Torture Survivors Program under DoH, said, “The main aim of organizing the theater is to primarily to get our message through to the youth since they are the future of our nation. Moreover, we hope that through theater we can help the youth understand the reality inside Tibet.”

She also added that solidarity is not just for those political prisoners in exile but also for those who are still suffering under the repressive regime of Chinese communist party.

The organization of former political prisoners organized a series of event titled ‘Remembering Tibetan Heroes’ at the Club House in McLeod Ganj where Geshe Monlam Tharchin, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, attended as the chief guest. He officially launched the organization’s website and the organization’s Annual Human Rights report as well.

Gu-Chu-Sum held a photo exhibition chronicling various protests by Tibetans against Chinese. Also on display were torture equipment smuggled out of prison, blood stained clothes of prisoners.

Tibetans and supporters later joined a candlelight vigil followed by a poetry recital in the evening.

Namgyal Dolkar, Vice Presiden of Gu-Chu-Sum, expressed her solidarity with those who are still suffering in Tibet, stating that those in exile have the moral responsibility to express support to those who are struggling in Tibet. “Torture still exists. China, despite being in the Security Council and claiming their stand against torture, still continues to disrespect the basic human rights in Tibet.”
