DHARAMSHALA, April 10: The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile expressed gratitude to the United States Senate on Thursday for unanimously passing a resolution calling on China to end the ongoing crisis inside Tibet.

Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament, in a press release expressed gratitude on behalf of the Tibetan people and thanked the US Senate for bringing to light “China’s repressive policies inside Tibet.”

In Tibet, 33 Tibetans have set their bodies on fire since 2009, demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet. Mass protests by thousands of Tibetans in recent months against China’s occupation of Tibet have been violently suppressed with indiscriminate firings and suspected demonstrators have been served lengthy jail terms.

Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) on March 29 had introduced Senate Resolution 356, condemning China’s “repressive policies targeting Tibetans.”

The Senate unanimously approved the resolution that called on China “to suspend implementation of religious control regulations” and to resume dialogue with representatives of the Dalai Lama.

In the resolution, the Senate urged China to free all people who have been “arbitrarily detained; to cease the intimidation, harassment and detention of peaceful protesters; and to allow unrestricted access to journalists, foreign diplomats and international organisations to Tibet.”

The resolution also reiterated earlier calls to bar China from opening further consulates in the United States until Beijing lets Washington start a mission in Tibet’s capital Lhasa.

“The Senate has sent a clear message to the Tibetan people: we stand in solidarity with you as you strive to preserve your culture and practice your faith freely,” said Senator Feinstein, one of the co-sponsors of the resolution. “The time has come for China to heed this message and end its repressive policies in Tibet.”

Senator Joe Lieberman, co-sponsor of the resolution, said the Senate recognises the importance of the “historic” 2011 general elections in the exile Tibetan community which elected “an exceptionally talented and impressive new Prime Minister or Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay.”

“This is a critical moment for the Senate to reaffirm that the treatment of Tibetans in China and denial of fundamental human rights there is a source of deep concern for the United States,” Senator Lieberman said.

The same day the resolution was passed, an identical resolution, House Resolution 609, was introduced in the US House of Representatives.

The bipartisan resolution, A Resolution Expressing Support for the People of Tibet, is cosponsored by Representatives James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and George Miller (D-CA).
