DHARAMSHALA, September 26: The Chinese authorities in Qinghai Province have warned the local monasteries from accessing social media to view or spread ‘illegal content’, ahead of the all important 19th National Congress in Beijing, reports Radio Free Asia.

The Chinese officials had summoned heads of local monasteries in Trika County of Tsolho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture for a meeting from September 14 to September 18, during which they were warned of the consequences if the orders were not obeyed.

A source on condition of anonymity said, “Authorities explained that the meeting was being conducted on the orders of higher authorities to tell the prefecture’s monks and nuns that they must not use social media to listen to, or to view and share photos and video clips of, illegal material during the period of the 19th National Congress.”

Citing the authorities, the source said that the monastic communities were also warned of ‘severe consequences’ if anyone was found guilty of breach.

The bans imposed ahead of all-important 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party are efforts employed by the Chinese authorities to ensure smooth running of the top party meeting where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to consolidate his power.

The ban on viewing and sharing of ‘illegal contents’ do not apply only to Tibetans. As per the source, around 10 Han Chinese are currently under investigation for ‘listening to and distributing illegal political material’ and soon likely to be sentenced for violating a direct command.

At the gathering of the heads of monasteries, the authorities had also stressed on the importance of ‘loyalty’ towards the party.

Similarly, China imposed a travel ban in TAR for all foreign travellers and Tibetans living outside TAR for ten days next month from October 18-28, which coincides with the meeting in Beijing.
