DHARAMSHALA: The US government said it would raise the issue of Tibet during annual human rights dialogue with China in Washington from 23-24 July. Assistant Secretary Michael Posner led the US side, while the Chinese delegation was led by Chen Xu, director general for international organising conferences.

“We consider that this is an integral part of all of the work we do to try to build a strong partnership and cooperation across the board with China,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

“We are always – whether it’s at the presidential level, the secretarial level, or at this working group level – raising not only individual cases but our concerns about rule of law, justice for individuals, equality, Tibet,” she said.

“So this is a very, very important dialogue not only in terms of being forthright about the issues, but also training and supporting those who are fighting for improvements inside China,” she added.

Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay, during his recent 5-day visit to Washington, DC, apprised the senior US officials about the human rights crisis inside Tibet, particularly the tragic self-immolation of Tibetans. He met State Department’s under secretary Mario Otero, senators and congressmen.

Moreover, in an Op-Ed in the Washington Post, Kalon Tripa called for the need of concrete action from the international community to help stop the tragedy in Tibet. “The time has come for the world to shut the noise of China’s influence and to hear the Tibetan cries: that repression is unbearable and unacceptable,” Kalon Tripa said.

“Because we know that the democracies of the world recognises basic human rights and freedoms to be universal values, we ask the international community to intervene before our situation deteriorates further. In its annual human rights dialogue with China this month, the State Department should urge the Chinese to relax restrictions in Tibet immediately and request fact-finding delegations to investigate the reasons for the tragically high number of self-immolations in Tibet,” Kalon Tripa added.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch said: “Ultimately these dialogues’ value is about accountability – primarily trying to hold the Chinese government to account for some of its gross human rights abuses.”

Since 2009, 44 Tibetans have set themselves on fire while shouting slogans for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and crying for freedom for Tibetans.
