DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 13: Prominent activist group Students for a Free Tibet today celebrated the ‘Tibetan Independence day’ here in the virtual capital of the exile Tibetan diaspora. Parallel activities will be carried out all over the world by Tibetans and pro-Tibet activists, a spokesperson said.

SFT said that as pre-requisites of nationhood prescribed by the United nation, the Tibetan National anthem or ‘Gyallu’ as it is known in Tibetan is the theme of the 2018 edition of the ‘Tibetan Independence Day’ which was sung in Tibet prior to Chinese invasion in 1959.

Tenzin Tselha, National Director of SFT-India said, “The Tibetan national anthem is one of those irrefutable elements that supplements the fact of Tibet’s independence. We highlight the Tibetan national anthem, the stone pillar of the Tibet-China Treaty of 821-822 AD, the Tibetan national flag among others, so that China’s claim of Tibet being historically a part of China is not only objected but proven wrong.”

“We commemorate Feb 13, Tibetan Independence Day, with ‘Stand for the Tibetan National Anthem’ as a theme to mark this important day and to highlight the Tibetan people’s vision for a free and democratic Tibet. A worldwide commemoration of this day will help renew our spirits and hope for the return of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to his rightful place in the Potala Palace in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet,” SFT said of the event.

In McLeod Ganj, SFT held an exhibition and hosted a musical night where Tibetan songs and music were played by Tibetan artists. SFT has also mobilised activists to sing the Tibetan national anthem in front of the Chinese consulate in New York City, to celebrate the day and to protest against China’s rule over Tibet.

The Tibetan national anthem was written by Trijang Rinpoche, the late tutor of Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Singing the anthem in occupied-Tibet is banned by China.
