The largest Tibetan organisation in exile denounced and condemned three activists comprising of mother, son and daughter for carrying a flag of People’s Republic of China (PRC) during their “March to Tibet” from McLeod Ganj via Nepal.

The trio — Dongpo Kyi, Tseten Dorjee and Lhamo Kyi — started their journey back home on the Tibetan uprising day on 10 March amid much cheer and applause. They only carried Tibetan flag when they started the march but later they were seen carrying an Indian, Nepalese and PRC’s flags along with Tibetan flag.

TYC considers the PRC flag as the symbol of “enemy”.

“For the first time in 53 years of exile history, Tseten Dorjee and his family members through their recent march to Tibet campaign is seen parading the Chinese flag. This marks a blotch in our exile history,” TYC President Tsewang Rigzin said during a press conference.

TYC initially supported the march and because of marching with the Chinese flag, which it says is “unimaginable and unwarranted”, has decided to refrain from recognising or supporting the trio’s campaign.

The marchers has said that they support the “Middle way” approach that seeks autonomy rather than outright independence for Tibet, and hence carried the PRC’s flag. TYC on the other hand seeks independence for Tibet.

Rigzin said TYC has no objection whether the marchers support the “Middle way” or independence. However, TYC takes umbrage at the fact that there has been no headway whatsoever with regard to the Tibetan issue with China, either through the “Middle way” policy or independence.

In addition, according to the TYC, under the red flag, symbolising PRC, more than a million Tibetans have died. The casualties continue to increase under the current regime. TYC emphasised the fact that Tibetan carrying the Chinese flag completely contradicts the moral responsibilities of Tibetans. This is because Tibetans inside Tibet are actually risking their lives to bring down the Chinese flag in their act of defiance against the Chinese oppression.

The dispute between Tibet and China is not a mere human rights issue but in essence it is that of sovereignty, Rigzin said. Similarly, TYC said the practice of burning the flag is one of their ways of protesting against the Chinese rule.
