DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 14: Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of social media giant Twitter called on Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Saturday. Jack Dorsey met the Tibetan leader in New Delhi during his first visit to India.

Twitter’s top honcho Dorsey tweeted a picture of the meeting and wrote, “Thank you @DalaiLama. You’re an amazing teacher” while playfully adding, “Also: Thank you for not actually pulling my nose ring, despite a lot of painful effort”.

The Tibetan leader’s private office reported that Dorsey thanked His Holiness for using Twitter and asked, what action would have the most impact on bringing religious traditions together, to which the Tibetan leader replied, “in general expressing affection and respect is what brings people together in most situations.”

The meeting has been touted as being “the end to China’s market” for Twitter by many who said that Beijing will most likely halt any re-entry talks for the social media app in the lucrative Chinese market. Observers also say that while many social media apps and companies are bending to harsh censorship norms and be on China’s good books to gain access to its market, Twitter CEO’s move is seen as a bold one and uncharacteristic of the often cut-throat business world.

Despite being banned in China since 2009, Twitter has over 10 million users in China according to Techcrunch which said that users access the forbidden app by using virtual private network, or a VPN which bypasses the government censorship.

Worldwide, Twitter has 335 million active users as of July this year and recorded a revenue of 2.44 billion USD last year. The company has subsidiaries such as Vine, Periscope and MoPub.

The Dalai Lama’s official twitter account created in February 2009 has 18.8 million followers and and has tweeted 1409 times till date. His twitter account follows no one.
