Young monk's wellbeing and whereabouts are unknown

Lobsang Gyatso, a monk from Kirti Monastery, set fire to himself in Ngaba Town at approximately 2pm local time.

The 19-year-old is the second teenager to set themselves on fire in Ngaba in the last three days following Tenzin Choeden (right) who died on Saturday.

Extra Chinese security
Chinese state security extinguished the flames and forcibly removed him.

It is believed that that two young men and a monk was beaten at the scene. One of the youths was taken away while the other managed to evade capture. One was described as bleeding from the head and arm.

Local people report that extra security personnel have been deployed to checkpoints around Ngaba Town and that people are being searched.

Protests in Jyekundo
Elsehwere some 200 people protested in Jyekundo Town, on Saturday 11 February. Chinese security forces reportedly closed the main square and the military surrounded it. There are unconfirmed reports that some protestors were taken away.

More protests followed the next day.

Local people report an increase in Chinese military in the area and that people cannot move around freely.

Tension in Tibet
The protests are taking place against an increasingly tense backdrop. Last week, a leading Communist Party Chief in Tibet told officials to prepare for "war".
