DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 15: The President of the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay who is currently on a official visit to Scandinavian nations has called explicitly for the support and endorsement of the ‘Middle Way Approach’, which he said does not refute the much touted “one China policy”. The MWA is the official stand of the CTA for the resolution of the Tibetan issue.

The head of the Tibetan polity said prominent Scandinavian nations such as Denmark and other like-minded governments “must collectively develop an approach to China that balances their business, trade and diplomatic interests with respect for the rights of the Chinese and Tibetan people.”

While lauding the support and commitment of the Nordic nations for supporting Tibet and Tibetans politically in rekindling dialogue between China and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he wrote, in an op-ed that the, “current, dominant narrative in Denmark on China—one that is cautious and overly congenial at times—can be discouraging, and I believe it runs counter to the values for which Denmark is famous. Meeting with His Holiness is deemed too confrontational and speaking out against China’s human rights violations is labeled “megaphone politics”. The order to keep Tibetan flags from the view of visiting Chinese leaders that led to the detainment of activists in 2012 was a particularly worrying incident.”

The Harvard educated said that nations there can find a balance in their bilateral trade prospects and that of holding China accountable for ideals such as liberty, democracy, freedom of speech and other human rights.

“The U.S has supported both ‘One China Policy’ and at the same time the ‘Middle Way Policy’ of the Tibetan people and doesn’t find contradiction between the two. Now is the time for Denmark to lead by example and one of the most concrete ways to support Tibet would be by endorsing the Middle Way Approach,” he further wrote.

Since he began his schedule in Northern Europe, he has met Member of the Norwegian Parliament Ola Elvestuen, from the Liberal Party and Petter Eide from the Socialist Left Party and former Secretary General of Amnesty Norway at the Norwegian parliament.

In Denmark, he had a meeting with Danish Parliamentarians representing a number of different political parties including Soren Espersen, foreign affairs spokesperson for the Danish People’s Party, Chairman of Foreign Policy Committee and member of Foreign Affairs committee, Mette Gjerskov and Kirsten Brosbol from the Social Democratic Party, Rasmus Nordqvist, foreign affairs spokesperson for The Alternative party, and Christian Juhl from the Red-Green Alliance. The Tibetan President is o a five-nation visit to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Canada and England until the end of November.
