DHARAMSHALA, September 5: A delegation of representatives from various NGOs based in Taiwan are on a visit to Dharamshala, home of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the seat of the exile Tibetan government (known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration.)

Delegation of Human Rights Network for Tibet and Taiwan (HRNTT), stated that they come with a hope of establishing a formal network to enhance mutual understanding and facilitate cooperation between the two nations in the future.

Founder and President of the organization, Tashi Tsering, was accompanying 10 delegates including two Taiwanese legislators Kolas Yotaka and Freddy Lim and Professor Song-Lih Huang at a press conference in Gangchen Kyishong.

Acknowledging the presence of other Tibetan NGOs in Taiwan, Tashi said that since the inception of a democratic party in Taiwan, there have been many discussions on the need of a common platform to establish a link between the two governments. Hence, it was unanimously decided to form HRNTT to give a platform to work together, Tashi added.

He further clarified, “This organization is not a support group for neither Tibet nor Taiwan. We aim to work for both Taiwan and Tibet during their time of need.”

With political lobbying and culture and education in their agenda, the delegation is also in talks with CTA and various Tibetan NGOs to work together in projects.

“We have plans to approach our government urging them to reduce barriers for Tibetan students to pursuit higher education in Taiwan. We think that students are often the best bridge between two countries,” said Huang, explaining one of their projects.

As for political lobbying, Legislator Kolas stated that she has sent in bills to protect the rights of Tibetans in Taiwan and also to abolish the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission in hope to clear channels for the CTA to directly communicate with Taiwanese government without succumbing to the pressure from China.

Rockstar and a strong supporter of Tibet, Legislator Freddy Lim, said that they have initiated the formation of Taiwan Parliamentary Group for Tibet to work on Tibetan issues.

Earlier today, the delegation met with the Dalai Lama. They also had interaction with Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, Speaker and Tibetans MPs during their three-day visit to Dharamshala.

The delegate today ‘officially’ invited the Tibetan spiritual leader to Taiwan with a hope that he would visit the island nation next year and grace their Parliament.

Members of Tibetan Parliament, Lobsang Dakpa and Tsering Lhamo, would be facilitating communication between the two parliaments and provide assistance for collaborations among NGOs.

HRNTT was formed in 2015, with activists, professors, students, writers and legislators as members.
