OTTAWA: Tibetan political leader Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay appeared before Canada’s Parliamentary subcommittee on International Human Rights on Wednesday, 23 November. In his testimonial, Sikyong made a strong case for Tibet and urged the committee to send an independent fact-finding delegation to assess the real situation inside Tibet.

This was Sikyong’s second appearance before the Canadian Parliamentary committee since his last appearance on 23 February 2013.

Sikyong highlighted the dire political and human rights situation inside Tibet under the Chinese government and expressed his deep concern over the ongoing destruction of Larung Gar monastery.

He outlined the Chinese government’s dismantling of residential huts and regulating the number of students allowed in the institution by almost half its current strength. He condemned the Chinese government over the move and called it a blatant infringement of the Tibetan people’s right to freedom of religion and faith.

He also called for an immediate resumption of constructive dialogue between Central Tibetan Administration and Chinese representatives to resolve the Tibet issue. He said the Central Tibetan Administration is ready anytime, anywhere, for dialogue but lamented the lack of positive response from the Chinese.

He further expressed the Tibetan administration’s deep concern on the status of the 11th Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and sought official answers on the Panchen Lama’s whereabouts and his family’s well being.

Canadian MP David Sweet also spoke at the hearing in support of Sikyong and explained the need for increased global attention, particularly Canada’s, on the Tibet issue. He lauded the Tibetan people’s indomitable spirit and resilience in the face of Chinese oppression and expressed regret at the global apathy towards Tibet under China’s growing economic influence.

Other Canadian Parliamentarians present at the hearing include Randall Garrison, David Anderson and Ms Iqra Khalid. Representatives from Canadian political parties and human rights organisations were also there.

Canada Tibet Committee, a Tibet advocacy group, also released a written submission to the Subcommittee on the occasion of Dr Sangay’s appearance in the Canadian Parliament. The submission highlighted the Tibetan proposal for a peaceful resolution of the Tibet issue and suggested that Canada could play an important role in the promotion of Tibetan freedom.
