The 23rd annual Shoton, or Tibetan Opera, Festival will be held from the 20th to the 25th April at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in McLeod Ganj.

The Dalai Lama is expected to grace the festival when it opens on 20th morning.

Lobsang Sangay, the President of the Central Tibetan Administration, and his Cabinet will also attend the opening day.

The festival was earlier scheduled to be held from the 18th, but the event has been postponed in honour of the 23 Indian school children who died in a bus accident in nearby Kangra Valley recently.

Tipa staff and artistes will hold a prayer session on the 18th in their memory.

On the opening day 12 troupes from different parts of India and one from Nepal will each present short excerpts of their performances.

Paonta Cholsum Lhamo Troupe is a new entrant this year.

Performances will be staged at TIPA from the 21st to 25th, and concurrent performances will take place at Norbulingka Institute and TCV School Chauntra from the 21st to 23rd.

A performance of the opera “Gyalsa Bhelsa” by TIPA will close the Festival.
