DHARAMSHALA, September 21: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been conferred with Master Degree Honoris Causa in Clinical Health Psychology by the University of Pisa today in Pisa.

Rector Paulo Mancarella of the university said that the academic senate of the institution had decided to honor the Tibetan spiritual leader for his ‘research’ and work towards bridging Buddhism and science.

“Our university traditional award honorary degrees to outstanding personalities in their specific scientific fields. But in this particular case, we recognize the fundamental contribution he gave to all the psychology disciplinary fields,” Rector Mancarella said before bestowing the honor upon the Dalai Lama.

His Holiness upon receiving the honorary degree thanked the university and said that being a student of Buddha and Nalanda tradition, he very much admires such kind of scientific research works which encourages investigations and experiments.

“This honorary degree gives me some kind of encouragement. At the age of 82, most part of my life has gone. But the remaining 15 or 20 years, I am totally dedicated to further work in promotion of such studies,” the Dalai Lama said.

The 1st Symposium of ‘The Mind-Science of Reality’ was jointly organized by the University of Pisa and Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa.

Currently on his four-nation Europe trip, His Holiness the Dalai Lama following his itineraries in Italy will be leaving for Latvia, where he will be giving a two-day teaching on Kamalashila’s The Middling Stages of Meditation (Gomrim Barpa) and Tsongkhapa’s Concise Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim Dudon) at Skonto Hall on September 23 and 24.

On the following day, he is also scheduled to give a public talk at the same venue, which will conclude his two-week Europe trip.
