DHARAMSHALA, May 12: The US Congressional Delegation led by House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi, during their meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thanked the Indian government for the continuous support for Tibet and hosting the Dalai Lama yesterday in New Delhi.

“In our meetings with top government officials, our delegation expressed our gratitude to the government and people of India for hosting His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala, and for the support to Tibetans living in India,” said Pelosi who led the eight-membered delegation to Dharamshala to meet the Dalai Lama.

The visit to New Delhi followed a short two-day visit to the abode of the Dalai Lama and the seat of Tibetan government in exile (official known as Central Tibetan Administration) where the delegation was honored with a public felicitation at Tsuglagkhang courtyard.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, who was born in India and is part of the bipartisan delegation, also expressed her appreciation towards India’s continuous hospitality to the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Accusing China of exerting pressure on nations including the US and Nepal against the exiled Tibetan leader, she said, “I’m proud of my birth country India for its support to them, and for making it clear that no economic considerations will be allowed to overshadow this issue.”

The President of CTA, Dr. Lobsang Sangay during the felicitation ceremony on May 10, thanked the Indian government and its people for hosting His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans for nearly 60 years.

In November 2015, House Minority leader Pelosi also led a US Congressional delegation in a rare access visit into Tibet where representatives Jim McGovern, Betty McCollum and Joyce Beatty were also present as a part of the delegation.

The 77-year-old US lawmaker, who is a big critic of China’s human rights abuse in Tibet and a great supporter of the exiled Tibetan leader, last visited Dharamshala with nine congressmen in 2008.
