DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 18: A delegation of German legislators called on the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Wednesday at latter’s residence here and also met with the leadership of the exile Tibetan government, known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration.

The delegation included Frank Heinrich (Chemnitz) (CDU/CSU), Ms Ute Vogt (Social Democratic Party of Germany) and Ms. Margareta Bause (Green Party) along with Ms. Anja Wollny (Secretariat Human Rights Committee), and Mr. Simon Stross (German Embassy, New Delhi).

The octogenarian Tibetan leader told the members of the German Bundestag that decades of failed policies in Tibet is prompting urge for realistic thinking among certain section of the top brass Chinese leadership. “In the free world especially in Germany, every occasion you express your concern about Tibet issue and Tibetan cultural heritage and environment. It’s very useful,” the Tibetan leader further said.

In response, Mr Frank Heinrich said, “When we hear you, we feel that we have represented now that we are here to complement and to see what voice we can be from your side. We risk even never to go to China again because they would not let us in because we talk to you and the president of exile government.”

The same day, the delegation visited the seat of the exile Tibetan polity at Gangchen Kyishong where they were hosted to an official reception. During the meet, President Sangay briefed the legislators on the deteriorating human rights and religious freedom inside occupied Tibet and urged the delegates to highlight the issue of Tibet and advocate the Tibetan cause in the German Bundestag.

The delegation also met with the Speaker of the Tibetan parliament in exile, members of the cabinet.

In May 2019, the former Special Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Kelsang Gyaltsen spoke at a hearing on “Religious Freedom: The human rights situation of religious minorities in China” in the German Bundestag in Berlin in front of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the Bundestag.
