DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 12: A group of Lithuanian legislators in the country’s capital Vilnius on Friday announced the formation of a solidarity group for Tibet in their parliament.

A representative of the group, MP Andrius Navickas have reportedly said that the group aspires to not let the issue of Tibet wane away from the global conscience and political frontlines.

“We must constantly remind ourselves there is such a thing as Tibet, there is such a thing as human rights, and we must be consistent. This reminder is the biggest support to Tibet,” he was reported as saying.

Office of Tibet, London’s envoy Chomphel Tsering hailed the move saying, "Merely setting such a group is an act of solidarity itself. I think Tibetans in exile and in Tibet will get to hear of this that itself gives them comfort, reassurance that their fight was not forgotten, even in a county far far away in Europe, many Tibetans not necessarily have heard of. For Tibetans to learn that there is a parliamentary group in the Lithuanian parliament will be a great source of strength to them."

The newly formed Provisional Group for Solidarity with Tibetans did not get the nod from the Lithuania's leadership as the administration considers Tibet as a part of China. However, the ad hoc group of support was established, as it does not need an official go-ahead from leaders of the parliament, Baltictimes reported.

The Tibetan envoy for Northern Europe, the Baltic states and Poland held a meeting with Mr Vytis Vidunas, the Chair of Lithuanian Tibet Support Group, and other key supporters. The Representative thanked the Chair and the other members of the Group for all their efforts on behalf of the Tibetan people and looked forward to their continued support, Central Tibetan administration run Tibet.net said.

A meeting between Tibetan exiled leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite in 2013 drew censure from China resulting in thawing of relations until 2015 when ties improved as China relaxed their stalled diplomacy.
