DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 7: A group of parliamentarians from Latvia has called for a lawful treatment of the Tibetan language rights activist Tashi Wangchuk. The MPs from the Latvian parliament known as the Saiema called for “fair and transparent” trial for the Tibetan currently detained by Chinese authorities in occupied Tibet.

20 parliamentarians including members of the Latvian Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet, issued a statement on the case of Tibetan language advocate Tashi Wangchuk on January 25.

The signatories of one fifth of the Latvian parliament urged the People’s Republic of China to implement a judgement process that is constant with international legal standards, with the presence of observers at his trial.

Earlier this month, Tashi’s trial at the Yushu Intermediate People's Court in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province ended without a verdict.

The 32-year-old education rights activist was arrested on January 2016 and charged with ‘inciting separatism’ in March 2016, following a New York Times reportage about him pursuing legal resorts to claim rights prescribed in the Chinese Constitution. He has been held in Yushu Detention Centre in Kyegudo since his arrest.

Similar declarations by the French Senate, German legislators and European Parliament called for a resolute and lawful trial for the Tibetan activists recently.
